Summary of Position

Under the general direction of the Dean for the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture (COLSA)/Director of the NH Agricultural Experiment Station (NHAES), the Manager of Farm Operations is responsible for coordinating efforts of all the NHAES/COLSA research and teaching farms, the Farm Services unit and their service providers in order to provide high quality and efficient research and teaching resources for NHAES/COLSA, UNH and stakeholders across the state and region.
The Manager of Farm Operations will manage the budgets of the various units (below), supervise and assume responsibility for the activities and outcomes of the six unit managers, plan and implement farm projects and acquire bids and negotiate leases as needed.
The Manager of Farm Operations will supervise the construction, repair and renovation projects for these and other COLSA/NHAES facilities, both on and off-campus.
The Manager of Farm Operations oversees and supervises the functions of the facility managers (Farm Manager I or II in most cases) for the Fairchild Dairy Teaching and Research Center, the Organic Dairy Research Farm, the Woodman and Kingman Farms, the Macfarlane Greenhouses, the Equine Facilities and the Farm Services unit, as well as supervises the COLSA Finish Carpenter.

Other minimum qualifications

Bachelor of Science degree in an appropriate field, with a minimum of 5 years farm management experience, and 3 to 5 years of supervisory experience.
Good communication and personnel skills are required.
This person must be able to translate COLSA/NHAES administrative goals and directives for the research and teaching facilities into effective actions and outcomes, and to build and work in a collaborative team environment.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

1. Ability and experience in operating farm machinery
2. Valid CDL license
3. More than 5 years directly-related farm managerial and supervisory experience

Duty/Responsibility

Plan and lead the implementation of strategic and operational goals, activities and policies for the Fairchild Dairy, the Organic Dairy Research Farm, the Woodman and Kingman Farms, the Macfarlane Greenhouses, the Equine Facilities and the Farm Services unit (hereafter called ‘the six units’), as well as the COLSA Finish Carpenter, under the broad supervision of the Director, NH AES.
Coordinate and supervise construction, repair and renovation projects for the six units and for other COLSA property and equipment. As needed, communicate and work with the appropriate Facilities staff and project managers. Oversee on-campus repair and renovation activities for the college via the COLSA Finish Carpenter.

Duty/Responsibility

Work with the Director of NHAES and the respective Farm Managers to plan and troubleshoot activities, personnel and initiatives across the entire system of COLSA/NHAES research and teaching farms, dairies, and greenhouses.

Overall responsibility for budget development and management for the six units. Initiate vendor contracts and purchasing processes for the various units. Be knowledgeable of IACUC requirements and help provide support for compliance and accountability where appropriate.

Coordinate the activities of the six units to ensure timeliness and success of all operations. Hire, train and supervise the managers of these individual units, and for the COLSA Finish Carpenter: providing annual performance reviews, setting goals & objectives, and providing oversight and support as needed.

Be responsible for timely communication with the farm managers and college administration regarding all aspects of farm operations and planning. Attend appropriate budget, planning and operations meetings.
