Summary of Position

The Communications Manager will be responsible for leading the EOS communications program and for the administration, content development and management of EOS’s websites, media and social media sites (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter), newsletters and other communication outreach. The incumbent will work directly with the EOS Executive Committee, faculty and management personnel to develop and implement a strategic communications plan for the Institute that will maximize the impact and visibility of EOS and EOS research activities. The incumbent will also be responsible for leading communications partnerships with the University of New Hampshire (UNH) and UNH Communications and Public Affairs (CPA) offices, state and federal legislator offices, and various environmental, academic and research groups. The incumbent is also expected to bring proven communications expertise in one or more communications skills (e.g. science writing, social media, graphic design, videography, photography, marketing etc.) that will complement existing communications capabilities within UNH CPA.

Other minimum qualifications

Bachelor’s degree. Three to five years related experience with writing and editing of scientific materials. Experience writing about science for general public audiences preferred. Strong communication, presentation, writing, editing, and interpersonal skills. Exceptional writing, communications and interpersonal skills. Team player who demonstrates a consistently positive attitude. Entrepreneurial with an ability to build a media operation from the ground up. Organized, detail-oriented, and adept at juggling multiple assignments to meet deadlines. Ability to express ideas clearly and logically and undertake independent problem solving. Experience or willingness to train in website content management systems and social media monitoring and analytics tools

Additional Preferred Qualifications

Solid experience in public relations, including writing press releases, media advisories, talking points, and backgrounders, op-eds, letters to the editor, fact sheets, and other materials; pitching media and using social media to connect to traditional media. Proven ability to successfully place brands and spokespeople in the media. Have a love of pitching media and finding the story angle to place brands in media conversations with a deep understanding of how media works.

Duty/Responsibility

-Development and implementation of a Strategic Communications Plan and strategy for EOS that builds on existing strengths, supports the UNH Strategic Plan and enhances research impacts and provides for robust Institute evaluation.

·Development of an annual report about research activities at EOS.
·Develop, integrate and grow EOS’s web, social media and email communications and marketing programs to be most effective in today’s evolving society.
·Identify and rapidly respond to strategic opportunities for media coverage of EOS research initiatives that may occur and then capitalizing on those opportunities

·Oversee and contribute to the conceptualization and preparation, and evaluation of publications and marketing materials (fact sheets, brochures, posters, position papers, articles, media releases, social media posts, etc. ) for diverse audiences including scientists, educators, students, the media, legislators and the general public.Arrange interviews and media presentations by EOS researchers. Identify and maintain contact lists for national and local media.
