Summary of Position

The role of the Chair is to function as an effective academic leader and vital member of the college’s leadership team while helping to guide realization of the university, college and department goals. This will include direction of visioning and strategic planning processes of the department; advancing and shaping its multi-faceted teaching and research programs; providing professional, intellectual, and administrative leadership; and stewarding the daily operations of the unit. The chair is also responsible for evaluating faculty and staff, assigning workloads, allocating resources, and communicating between the department and the college. The chair is expected to teach one course per year, conduct research and serve the University and profession.

The Department of Biological Sciences is one of the five academic units within the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture, which includes the state’s Agricultural Experiment Station. The department has four undergraduate majors, Biology; Marine Estuarine and Freshwater Biology; Neuroscience and Behavior; and Zoology; as well as two graduate programs, Marine Biology and Integrative Biology. The department is home to over 400 undergraduate students and 40 graduate students, 18 tenured and tenure-track faculty, and three lecturer faculty. Relevant campus facilities include the Hubbard Center for Genome Studies, the Insect and Arthropod Collection, and the Hodgdon Herbarium. Additional facilities include several university farms and greenhouses, the Jackson Estuarine Laboratory, the Coastal Marine Laboratory, and the Isles of Shoals Marine Laboratory.

A PhD. in a discipline of substantive relevance to the department’s mission and focus.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated success in teaching and research within one of the department’s focal areas and demonstrated aptitude for leadership. We seek an individual whose research complements the interdisciplinary research of the department and who has demonstrated an ability to work collaboratively across diverse academic communities.
