Summary of Position

The Department of Physics and the Space Science Center at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) invite applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2018 in the broad area of experimental astrophysics. The successful applicant can expect to interact with other research groups, in particular, the astrophysics group in the Space Science Center and the gravitational / high-energy theory group in the Physics Department. The astrophysics group conducts experimental research in X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy from both balloon and satellite platforms. Among its current projects are a program to develop a next-generation Compton telescope and an effort to deploy a gamma-ray-burst polarimeter. Current X-ray research focuses on studies of black holes and tidal disruption events. There is also closely related research in cosmic rays, high-energy solar radiations, and high-energy atmospheric radiations. The gravitational / high-energy theory group has ongoing research in compact object mergers, gravitational waves, gamma-ray bursts, and classical gravitational physics. The successful candidate will have a strong track record of research demonstrating outstanding potential for establishing his or her own independent research program. The Department of Physics has twenty four teaching faculty as well as approximately sixty undergraduate physics majors and sixty graduate students. Thirteen of these teaching faculty, together with twelve research faculty and several research scientists, are members of UNH’s Space Science Center, an organization that has a history of more than sixty years in space science research. UNH has led and/or participated in numerous space missions (many with hardware contributions), including OSO-7, SMM, CGRO, Cluster, STEREO, IBEX, Van Allen Probes, GOES, Solar Orbiter, Solar Probe Plus, and MMS. Extensive experimental resources are available, including a machine shop, engineering support, thermal / vacuum test facilities, and EMI/EMC test facilities. In addition, UNH has excellent computational resources, including a CRAY XE6m-200 supercomputer. UNH researchers enjoy a close collaborative relationship with the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), whose Department of Earth, Oceans, and Space (SwRI-EOS) is co-located and shares facilities with the UNH Space Science Center. The candidate should be enthusiastic about teaching physics and astronomy classes at all levels, and would actively participate in the development of an astronomy program within the Department of Physics. Candidates for this position must have the ability and desire to participate in graduate and undergraduate education and to lead a major, independent research effort in the area of experimental astrophysics. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, or a related field. The candidate should demonstrate an ability to lead in an increasingly diverse cultural, social and ethnic community.
