Summary of Position

Keene State College seeks applications for two Educational Counselors for the Upward Bound Programs. The Educational Counselors work as part of a team to support students for success in high school and enrollment in college as outlined in the goals of the Upward Bound Programs. These are grant-funded, 100% time 12 month positions, with start dates of January 2018. Positions are contingent upon grant funding; continuance of the positions is expected upon grant renewal conditions and grant funding.

Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math-Science are year-round college preparatory programs. The programs: prepare students for success in high school and enrollment in college, are funded by the U.S. Department of Education; are free of charge to students who meet eligibility criteria including being low-income and first generation college; and serve students enrolled in identified target high schools.

Responsibilities include: Recruit eligible Upward Bound Programs students; conduct needs assessment of individual students; develop school year and summer academic plans; provide academic counseling to caseload of students; offer college search, admissions, scholarships, financial aid/literacy, learning skills, time management, career and college exploration; attend staff meetings; represent TRIO on campus and in community; maintain federally mandated documentation including weekly contact logs, mileage, time and effort, applications, grade reports etc.; be familiar with technology including Microsoft Excel, Student Access database, and Google Suite, coordinate with college, target high schools, parents, students and community to promote program; attend professional development conferences and training; conduct both formative and summative programmatic assessments; facilitate academic year large group activities including grade specific workshops, college tours, and parent communications; supporting student and parents in college selection and leading the financial aid/literacy process; support recruitment, orientation and training of summer staff; support Upward Bound Summer program; maintain communications including newsletters, forms, permission slips, year books and social media and web presence. These positions require a flexible work schedule with some travel and night and weekend hours.

Other minimum qualifications

Master’s degree in mathematics, science, engineering, counseling, education, human services or area closely related to program, or matriculation in a Master’s program; minimum one year of experience working with students in college, secondary school or community setting; knowledge of college search, admissions and financing; proven ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written means; demonstrated interpersonal, organizational, supervisory and project management skills; ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, teachers, guidance counselors, administrators and staff; demonstrated proficiency with computer applications including Microsoft Word and Excel, and familiarity with student information, learning management, and relational database systems (such as Student Access).

Additional Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience as a participant or staff member of a TRIO program preferred; proven commitment to the needs of disadvantaged students; knowledge of College and Career Ready Assessments including Smarter Balance, SAT, ACT, Accuplacer, college essays, college recommendations, Common Application. Additionally, the College has identified desirable qualifications that support our commitment to creating and maintaining a diverse campus community including the ability to speak a second language or to bring a multicultural perspective to the campus.

Salary Information

The position’s starting salary: $41,890, complemented by a comprehensive benefits package which includes medical, dental, retirement, tuition, and paid time off.
