Summary of Position

The College of Life Sciences and Agriculture at the University of New Hampshire invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant Professor level in the area of 1) microbial pathogenesis and 2) molecular epidemiology starting Fall 2018.

The positions will be housed in the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Biomedical Sciences (MCBS). The successful applicants will be expected to develop a strong research program in either microbial pathogenesis (with a focus on zoonotic disease, disease ecology, and/or host-pathogen interactions) or molecular epidemiology (with expertise in big-data approaches to evolutionary and/or population genomics applied to the etiology, distribution and prevention of disease in animal and/or human populations).

These disciplines are undergoing a transformation bolstered by powerful new technologies, including innovative computational techniques, data analytics and integrative biology that address fundamental questions in microbiology and epidemiology. It is our vision that UNH will build on existing strengths in microbiology and genomics/bioinformatics, while advancing our understanding of these disciplines as they relate to the basic biomedical sciences. Graduate student training opportunities with departmental assistantship support are provided through affiliation with any of the MCBS administered graduate programs including Microbiology, Genetics, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Molecular and Evolutionary Systems Biology.

The primary responsibilities of this position will be the development of a productive and externally funded research program, effective mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students, and teaching within the department’s undergraduate and graduate programs. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate- and graduate-level courses consistent with the expertise of the candidate and with departmental and college needs.

Acceptable Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in microbiology, molecular epidemiology, or closely related field, the demonstrated potential to develop and lead a strong internationally recognized research program, and evidence of commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching and training. The ability to collaborate effectively with a broad range of biologists is important. Postdoctoral experience, university or agency-based, is required.

The Department of Molecular Cellular and Biomedical Sciences is one of four units within the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture, which includes the state’s Agricultural Experiment Station.

MCBS offers degrees at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral levels and faculty participate in additional interdisciplinary, university-wide doctoral programs. Undergraduate programs focus on preparing students for careers in biomedicine and the life sciences as well as for advanced training in graduate or professional programs.
