Summary of Position

The Associate Director of Development for University Initiatives is a discovery-focused position that seeks to build pipelines of major gift prospects for priority initiatives across the University including such areas as Academic Affairs, the Library, the Graduate School, and the ECenter, among others. Reporting directly to the Associate Vice President (AVP) for Development, this position qualifies, cultivates, and solicits UNH alumni and friends, focusing on gifts of $25K or more. The expectation is that 75% of effort will be devoted to pipeline development, qualification, and front-line fundraising, and 25% to partnering with the AVP on University-wide fundraising strategy and other duties. The incumbent will both contribute to a strong finish for the current campaign and lay the groundwork for the University’s next comprehensive campaign.

• Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years of experience in development in an academic setting, or a related field.

• Willingness to both work alone and ability to work collaboratively with college and university colleagues.
• Ability to maintain donor confidentiality when warranted.
• Skill using applicable computer software and programs.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree in business, marketing, or similar field.
• Experience in a university fundraising environment.
• Knowledge of charitable giving vehicles, estate planning, and current laws governing charitable giving.
• Comprehensive campaign experience in a higher education setting.

Duties / Responsibilities

Job Duties


1. Prospect Pipeline Development

• Primarily through database analysis, discover, and qualification activity, expand and refine the pool of donors and begin connecting individuals to priority funding areas based on information gathered about a prospective donor’s passion and interests.
• Forge relationships with new constituents and establish networks of donors leading to the identification of new potential high capacity donors by working with the AVP, Deans and Directors, Foundation staff, and other leadership.
• Partner with the AVP to initiate direct constituent engagement with Deans, Directors, staff, and/or faculty to engage individual donors and draw them closer to UNH priorities and initiatives.
• Facilitate volunteer engagement opportunities that can expand the prospect pipeline e.g. mentoring relationships, advisory boards, event participation, and other partner programs.
• Assist in planning and attend high-level donor events and board and advisory group activities.


2. Front Line Fundraising

• Manage and actively expand a portfolio of prospective donors who are heavily weighted in early qualification and often untested. Successfully and effectively move prospects through the donor lifecycle by building relationships with prospective and current donors to maximize their lifetime philanthropic relationship with UNH
• Collaborate with university and college colleagues, including teams such as alumni relations, corporate and foundation relations, annual giving, and gift planning, to strategically move donors and prospects.
• Develop an annual activity plan for assigned prospects. Travel throughout the state, region, and nation, often with senior leadership officials, to cultivate and solicit assigned prospects.
• In close coordination with the AVP, engage, advise, and partner with college and university administrators, faculty, and friends in the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of assigned prospects.
• Recruit, cultivate, and train key volunteers in pursuit of fundraising goals and guide/provide leadership in their fund-raising efforts.
• Negotiate and craft proposals and gift agreements; oversee the gift acknowledgment process and put stewardship plans in place for all assigned donors


3. Fundraising Strategy Partnership;
Special Projects; Other Duties

• Participate in a post-campaign planning process to enhance the UNH major gift pipeline and increase readiness for the next comprehensive campaign.
• Develop reports, analysis, presentations, and other materials for audiences ranging from donors to academic leadership.
• Act as liaison with campus, legal counsel, and USNH officials regarding tax law, gift acceptance and stewardship.
• Collaborate with marketing and communications colleagues on the development of engagement vehicles that communicate gift opportunities, including printed materials, publicity and events.
• Prepare briefings for the President, deans, and other officials.
• Perform related duties and special projects as assigned.
